Tell Us Your Story

For more than three years, the nation has been grappling with the realities of President Obama’s health care law. We are learning more each day about how the resulting increase in health care costs, decrease in full-time jobs, and loss of existing health coverage harms our families and workplaces. However, the repercussions of the health care law for the nation’s education system have received less attention. Accordingly, we are seeking your help to educate policymakers about how the health care law is affecting K-12 schools, colleges, and universities.

Due to its cost, size, and complexity, the health care law is presenting new challenges for local education leaders. At a recent House Education and the Workforce Committee hearing, witnesses described a number of difficult choices facing their schools. One witness testified the health care law could create $4.6 million in new costs for his school district – potentially costing 58 teaching positions. Another testified the law could force his university to raise tuition by as much as 20 percent and make it more difficult to offer a flexible, convenient course schedule.

We are concerned similar events are taking place across the country, diminishing the quality of education for students. In order to better understand how the president’s health care law is affecting classrooms and college campuses, the Education and the Workforce Committee is asking for your help.

We want you to share your stories about this important issue. Has the health care law led to higher or lower costs for your school or university? Are teachers, adjunct professors, support staff, or student workers seeing their hours increased or decreased? Are schools and postsecondary institutions expanding educational services and programs for students or cutting them? Has the health care law created unexpected challenges for your school or college through regulatory burdens or increased costs? Please visit submit your comments in the form below, or email the committee at TellYourStory@mail.house.gov.
