***MEDIA ADVISORY*** THIS WEEK: Hearings Examining the Misuse of AmeriCorps Funds, OSHA Recordkeeping Standards

The House Committee on Education and the Workforce will meet this week to examine the activities of the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), as well as to discuss ways to promote safe workplaces through effective and responsible Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recordkeeping standards. Both hearings will take place in room 2175 of the Rayburn House Office Building.
  • Tuesday, May 24 at 10:00 a.m., the Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Training, chaired by Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC), will hold a hearing entitled, “Demanding Accountability at the Corporation for National and Community Service.” An investigation by the CNCS Office of Inspector General recently revealed that federal grant money was used by AmeriCorps members to provide abortion-related services in violation of federal law. This is just one example of the corporation’s ongoing deficiencies in its grants oversight and management. The hearing will examine the corporation’s protocols for monitoring the activities of its grantees, sub-grantees, and AmeriCorps members, and it will also provide members an opportunity to discuss what actions are necessary to ensure federal dollars are spent in full compliance with the law.
  • Wednesday, May 25 at 10:00 a.m., the Subcommittee on Workforce Protections, chaired by Rep. Tim Walberg (R-MI), will hold a hearing entitled, “Promoting Safe Workplaces through Effective and Responsible Recordkeeping Standards.” As part of an effort to evaluate the effectiveness of federal health and safety policies, employers are required to record and report workplace injuries, illnesses, and fatalities. The hearing will examine current recording and reporting policies, as well as changes to these policies put forward by the Obama administration.
