Kline Statement on Inspector General’s Report Revealing Misuse of AmeriCorps Funds

House Education and the Workforce Committee Chairman John Kline (R-MN) today issued the following statement in response to the findings of an investigation by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) Office of Inspector General, which determined the National Association of Community Health Centers used federal grant money to allow AmeriCorps members to provide abortion-related services in violation of federal law:

The findings of the Inspector General’s investigation are deeply disturbing. This organization violated federal law by providing assistance for abortion-related services. A slap on the wrist is offensive to American taxpayers and sends the wrong message to other grantees who may consider engaging in similar unlawful activity. The Corporation for National and Community Service must immediately cease all funding to this organization. Since this isn’t the first time concerns have been raised about unlawful use of federal funds through the AmeriCorps program, CNCS should also conduct a comprehensive review to ensure all other grantees in the program are complying with the law. The committee will take action if it is necessary to ensure this agency is holding its grantees accountable under the law.
