The House Committee on Education and the Workforce will hold hearings this week to conduct oversight of the Corporation for National and Community Service and discuss H.R. 986, the Tribal Labor Sovereignty Act of 2017. The hearings will take place in room 2175 of the Rayburn House Office Building.
  • On Tuesday, March 28 at 10:00 a.m., the Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Development, chaired by Rep. Brett Guthrie (R-KY), will meet to examine the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), which is responsible for overseeing a variety of federal community service programs and grants. CNCS has a history of failing to effectively monitor the use of taxpayer funds by its grantees. This hearing will provide members the opportunity to hear from independent government watchdogs about the challenges and inefficiencies that have led to the flawed monitoring and mishandling of taxpayer dollars.

  • On Wednesday, March 29 at 10:00 a.m., the Subcommittee on Health, Employment, Labor, and Pensions will hold a hearing to examine H.R. 986, the Tribal Labor Sovereignty Act of 2017. Introduced by Rep. Todd Rokita (R-IN), the legislation would protect Native Americans from National Labor Relations Board interference and restore a long-standing precedent that tribal businesses owned and operated on tribal lands are exempt from the National Labor Relations Act. The legislation would help ensure Native American governments enjoy the same rights and protections as state and local governments.
