Kline Commends Step Forward in Reauthorizing D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Bill

U.S. House Education and the Workforce Committee Chairman John Kline (R-MN) issued the following statement today praising the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform’s approval of the Scholarships for Opportunity and Results (SOAR) Act (H.R. 471), which includes language to reauthorize the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program (D.C. OSP):

“Today’s committee vote to reauthorize the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program continues a bipartisan effort to provide meaningful choices and real hope to parents and students in the District. This critical step brings us closer to providing more low-income families with the high-quality education opportunities they deserve. Since the program’s inception in 2004, the D.C. OSP has empowered parents to take an active role in their children’s schooling and provided an educational lifeline to thousands of students in need. A Department of Education study confirms the program has increased graduation rates to more than 90 percent in a low-income population of students previously trapped in dangerous, underperforming schools. I urge my colleagues to continue to support the immediate reauthorization of this valuable program.”
