ICYMI: Kline on Bill Bennett’s Morning in America

This morning, House Education and the Workforce Chairman John Kline (R-MN) appeared on Bill Bennett’s Morning in America radio program to discuss the next steps in education reform.

During the interview, Chairman Kline described his support for a series of targeted education reform bills that take a step-by-step approach to addressing the problems in the nation’s education system.  He also discussed the committee’s first reform bill, the Setting New Priorities in Education Spending Act (H.R. 1891), which would streamline and simplify the federal role in education by eliminating 43 wasteful K-12 education programs:

"There are some 80 individual programs inside the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and we have a bill to eliminate 43 of those. It's just too complicated, it's difficult to deal with, it's indication that we've got programs that somebody thought was a great idea at one time and they just don't go away. So, we waste money, we waste energy, we need to get more streamlined, more efficient, more effective and start pulling the federal government progressively out of running education."
