Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC), chairwoman of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, and Rep. Todd Rokita (R-IN), chairman of the Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education, today issued the following joint statement in response to the Department of Education's updated guidance on state plans under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA):

The Every Student Succeeds Act returned control over important education decisions to those who know best what students need — their parents, states, and local education leaders. Across the country, local leaders are working to implement the law’s bipartisan reforms, and the department’s guidance will help them move forward with those efforts. This is an encouraging step in delivering on our promise to empower states and ensure all children receive an excellent education. We look forward to continuing to work with the department to make sure that this important law is implemented according to its letter and intent and that states have both the certainty and flexibility they need to provide their students a high-quality education.
