Today, Republican Leader of the Education and Labor Committee Virginia Foxx (R-NC) and Rep. Mary Miller (R-IL) sent a letter to Education Secretary Miguel Cardona demanding transparency surrounding the agency’s reinterpretation of Title IX, which puts students at greater risk of sexual assault.

In the letter, the Members write: “We are deeply concerned with recent reports of sexual assaults in our public schools, which exemplify the misguided nature of the Department of Education’s (Department) interpretation of Title IX. The interpretation endangers young girls by putting their rights and needs second to the political agenda of the Biden administration.”

The Members continue: “The lack of transparency regarding the safety of children at school is alarming. Parents should know what is happening in their schools and have confidence that school administrators are keeping their children safe… We know that we cannot stop all cases of assault in our schools, but we should take commonsense precautions to work together with parents to protect our children.”

The Members conclude: “[T]he Trump administration issued regulations outlining schools’ responsibilities for investigating sexual assault allegations under Title IX. Those regulations, if properly applied and enforced, provide schools with the tools to conduct fair and comprehensive investigations to ensure the rights of all students are protected.”

The Department of Justice’s recent memo to the FBI justified its investigation of parents concerned about their child’s education and safety in part due to a sexual assault case in Virginia. The child’s father – not the child who sexually assaulted another student – was subjected to police action for raising concerns at his daughter’s school. These parents are now being labeled “domestic terrorists” by groups supported by the Biden administration.
