Kline Urges Defeat of Controversial Labor Nominee

WASHINGTON, D.C., February 4, 2010 | Alexa Marrero or Ryan Murphy ((202) 225-4527)

Rep. John Kline (R-MN), Senior Republican on the U.S. House Education and Labor Committee, today urged Senators to reject the nomination of Service Employees International Union Associate General Counsel Craig Becker to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). Previously, Kline called on the Senate to hold hearings on Becker’s nomination citing concerns over arguments Becker had made in support of drastically expanding the authority of the NLRB at the expense of workers and their employers.

“The role of the National Labor Relations Board is to uphold the law, not reshape it. A close examination of Mr. Becker’s record exposes his dangerous belief that federal labor law can be manipulated to achieve his desired outcome,” said Kline. “The special interests have made clear their desire to see Becker seated so he can impose the anti-worker card check scheme through regulatory dictate. Congress alone has the responsibility to write our nation’s laws, which is why this controversial nomination should be rejected.”
