***MEDIA ADVISORY*** Committee to Review GAO Report on Government Waste
WASHINGTON, D.C.,
April 4, 2011
On Wednesday, April 6 at 10:00 a.m., the U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workforce, chaired by Rep. John Kline (R-MN), will hold a hearing entitled, "Streamlining Federal Education and Workforce Programs: A Look at the GAO Report on Government Waste." The hearing will take place in room 2175 of the Rayburn House Office Building.
On March 1, 2011, the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) released a report entitled “Opportunities to Reduce Potential Duplication in Government Programs, Save Tax Dollars, and Enhance Revenue” that examined overlap, fragmentation, and duplication of federal programs. The report found 82 separate programs aimed at improving teacher quality, and 47 distinct workforce training programs. Many of these programs are managed by multiple agencies and aimed at the same beneficiaries, causing unnecessary duplication and wasted tax dollars. As Congress works to get the federal government's fiscal house in order, analyzing and eliminating ineffective and redundant programs is an important part of the fight to end out-of-control federal spending. Wednesday’s hearing will give members the opportunity to review and investigate reports of wasteful federal programs.
