On Wednesday, June 15 at 10:00 a.m., the U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workforce, chaired by Rep. John Kline (R-MN), will hold a markup of the Protecting Academic Freedom in Higher Education Act (H.R. 2117). The markup will take place in room 2175 of the Rayburn House Office Building.

Last fall, the Department of Education released a package of program integrity regulations scheduled to take effect July 1, 2011. Two of the regulations, which deal with state authorizations and the definition of a credit hour, would inject the federal government into areas that have historically been left to the states or institutions of higher education, and could also lead to increased regulatory burdens and costs for schools and students.

The Protecting Academic Freedom in Higher Education Act (H.R. 2117), introduced by Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Training Chairwoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC) would repeal the credit hour and state authorization regulations. This important legislation would protect students and higher education institutions from more unnecessary regulations and federal overreach.
