ICYMI: Kline Discusses President’s Student Loan Plan, House-Passed NLRB Legislation with Wall Street Journal

On Monday, U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workforce Chairman John Kline (R-MN) spoke with the Wall Street Journal's James Freeman about President Obama’s controversial student loan plan, as well as the Protecting Jobs from Government Interference Act, bipartisan House-passed legislation that would prohibit the National Labor Relations Board from dictating where a private business can and cannot create jobs.

Excerpts from the interview are below:

On President Obama’s proposed student loan plan…

"I am worried that there are not taxpayer protections in [the plan] so I wrote a letter to Secretary Duncan to say, 'What’s going to happen? Give us your analysis of what’s going to happen when these loans are not repaid.' I think it also gives an incentive to students to say, '[The loans are] going to be waived anyway, so if I’m not going to pay this I can take out even more debt.' I think it’s going to have adverse effects across the board … and cost taxpayers’ dollars."

On the Protecting Jobs from Government Interference Act (H.R. 2587)…

"[The Protecting Jobs from Government Interference Act] would change the National Labor Relations Act so the board could not [dictate where a business can or cannot locate work]... That ‘remedy’ as it’s called will be taken away from [the NLRB] so they can’t tell any business where they can or cannot establish a business... I think that makes sense. [The legislation] did pass the House and it did have some Democrat support. It is over in the Senate. There is pressure from Republicans in the Senate to try to get [the bill] to move, and I think it’s something that needs to be done."
