VIDEO RELEASE: Rep. Foxx Champions Effort to Streamline Workforce Development Programs

Republicans on the House Committee on Education and the Workforce are taking action to improve the nation’s workforce investment system. Last week, Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC) introduced the Streamlining Workforce Development Programs Act (H.R. 3610). The legislation strengthens job training support for workers by consolidating redundant programs, increasing accountability, and reducing administrative inefficiencies.

Rep. Foxx, who chairs the Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Training, recently filmed a video in which she describes how the legislation removes unnecessary bureaucracy and promotes better use of taxpayer dollars.

Watch Rep. Foxx’s video below:

The American taxpayer wants to know that when he or she sends money to Washington, D.C., that it is spent effectively, that there’s transparency about how the money is being spent, and that there is accountability. We want to provide a good return on the money the taxpayer is sending to Washington, and this [legislation] will help us move in that direction.

A 2011 Government Accountability Office (GAO) report identified 47 separate federal job training programs that cost taxpayers $18 billion annually. Many programs overlap and only five have been evaluated for effectiveness. The Streamlining Workforce Development Programs Act consolidates 33 of the 47 programs into four flexible Workforce Investment Funds, providing a more efficient use of taxpayer funds.

The legislation is part of committee Republicans’ ongoing efforts to reauthorize the Workforce Investment Act and improve job training for America’s workers.
