Kline Encourages Return to Fiscal Responsibility in Washington

Supports Temporary Funding Measure to Prevent Government Shutdown, Cut Spending by $4 Billion

U.S. House Education and the Workforce Committee Chairman John Kline (R-MN) issued the following statement today after the U.S. House of Representatives approved a continuing resolution to temporarily fund the federal government through March 18, 2011:

“Instituting a responsible budget is the first step toward putting our nation back on the path to prosperity.  For too long, leaders in Washington have chosen to kick the can down the road, preferring to let ‘someone else’ deal with the looming fiscal crisis.  As a result, our national debt has surpassed $14.1 trillion, more than 13 million Americans are unable to find work, and our economic recovery continues to falter.

No one said it would be easy.  My House Republican colleagues and I have been forced to make tough choices – tough choices no one wants to make.  But we simply cannot continue spending beyond our means.  That’s why we passed a budget two weeks ago that would cut spending by more than $100 billion as compared to the president’s budget blueprint.

I am disappointed some in Congress continue to behave as though passing the buck is a sustainable strategy, choosing a government shutdown over a responsible budget proposal. By passing this temporary funding measure today, House Republicans have provided another opportunity to work together on enacting a commonsense budget – one that lays the groundwork for a new direction in Washington and encourages a more prosperous future for American businesses and families."
