***MEDIA ADVISORY*** Subcommittee to Explore State and Local Efforts to Improve Public School Accountability

On Wednesday, September 21 at 10:00 a.m., the Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education, chaired by Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA), will hold a hearing entitled, “Education Reforms: Ensuring the Education System is Accountable to Parents and Communities.” The hearing will take place in room 2175 of the Rayburn House Office Building.
Under current elementary and secondary education law, school performance is measured by a federal accountability system with four separate components: academic standards, assessments, accountability, and school improvement. An alarming number of school districts are failing to demonstrate their students are achieving academic excellence and proficiency as defined by the current federal system. In an effort to boost student achievement, some states and school districts are working to implement their own innovative accountability systems that increase transparency, engage parents and community members, and raise the bar for school success. Wednesday’s subcommittee hearing will review the importance of public school accountability, examine successful state and local approaches to accountability, and continue the discussion on the appropriate federal role in the process.
