***MEDIA ADVISORY*** UPDATED TIME: Subcommittee Hearing on Voluntary Protection Programs and Workplace Safety
WASHINGTON, D.C.,
June 27, 2012
On Thursday, June 28th at 9:30 a.m., the Workforce Protections Subcommittee, chaired by Rep. Tim Walberg (R-MI), will hold a hearing entitled, “Promoting Safe Workplaces Through Voluntary Protection Programs.” The hearing will take place in room 2175 of the Rayburn House Office Building.
Administered by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) recognize employers who implement workplace safety policies that exceed federal standards. Employers who participate in VPP are exempt from “generally scheduled” OSHA inspections. By encouraging employers to go beyond federal safety requirements and proactively promote the health and safety of their workers, VPP participants report fewer days away or restricted from work due to an injury or illness.
Tomorrow’s hearing will provide members the opportunity to examine the effectiveness of VPP and explore how the programs have changed in recent years. To view a list of witnesses and learn more about the hearing, visit /hearings. # # # |
