Kline: Let’s Stand with D.C. Students, Support SOAR Reauthorization Act

Right now, the House is considering the Scholarships for Opportunity and Results Reauthorization Act. Introduced by Speaker John Boehner (R-OH), the bill (H.R. 10) will ensure the popular and successful D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program continues to serve students from needy families residing in the District of Columbia.
Just moments ago, House Education and the Workforce Committee Chairman John Kline (R-MN) urged his colleagues to join him in supporting H.R. 10 and extend a vital effort that has helped thousands of low-income students receive a high-quality education.
Last year, 90 percent of 12th graders who received a D.C. Opportunity Scholarship graduated from a high-quality school, and 88 percent went on to pursue a college degree. What’s more, when asked if they were satisfied with their child’s education, 85 percent of parents responded “yes.” It’s no wonder every year the demand for scholarships far exceeds the number of scholarships available. These positive results also explain why this important program has long enjoyed bipartisan support … I urge my colleagues to help more low-income students in our nation’s capital receive the quality education they deserve by supporting this important legislation, and I yield back the balance of my time.
