Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC), chairwoman of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, today issued the following statement following House passage of the STOP School Violence Act of 2018 (H.R. 4909):

“All children must be safe in school, and students and families need to feel confident that schools are secure environments.

“I’m pleased to see Congress act in a bipartisan way to give school districts and local communities the flexibility and funding necessary to provide students with a safe learning environment, and the supportive services necessary to prevent future tragedies.”

Background: Chairwoman Foxx and Ranking Member Bobby Scott (D-VA) recently sent a letter requesting action from the House Appropriations Committee to support local efforts to enhance student and school safety measures by funding the Student Support and Academic Enrichment Grants (SSAEG) as authorized in the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).

Measures adopted within the STOP School Violence Act of 2018 are consistent with committee recommendations made to the House Appropriations Committee following a February 2013 hearing the Committee on Education and the Workforce held on school safety.
