Today, Republican Leader of the Committee on Education and Labor, Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC), issued the following statement commending the Trump administration’s new rule to safeguard the religious liberties in faith-based organizations:
“Too often religious organizations are targeted by leftist politicians and organizations who seek to strip them of their Constitutional rights. The Trump administration has worked diligently to push back against policies that would diminish the faith of any American.
“I applaud the Justice Department, the U.S. Agency for International Development, and the departments of Education, Health and Human Services, Labor, Homeland Security, Housing and Urban Development, Agriculture, and Veterans Affairs for banding together on this issue.
“Today’s rule will ensure that faith-based organizations can receive federal funding and continue serving their participants without being discriminated against for their religious beliefs.”
BACKGROUND: The Trump administration has been an ardent supporter of the First Amendment and the protections it guarantees to individuals and private organizations. In 2017, the Trump administration issued an Executive Order directing federal agencies to protect religious freedom to the “greatest extent practicable and to the extent permitted by law.” The rule issued today is the latest move in an administration-wide effort to safeguard Americans’ religious rights.
