Republican Leaders to AG Garland: “Immediately retract your memo”

WASHINGTON, D.C., October 26, 2021
Today, Education and Labor Committee Republican Leader Virginia Foxx (R-NC) joined House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and Judiciary Committee Republican Leader Jim Jordan (R-OH) in sending a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland demanding that he suspend his unnecessary parent task force, as outlined by the October 4th memo threatening concerned parents at school board meetings.

This comes after the National School Boards Association (NSBA) retracted its letter likening parents to domestic terrorists, the same letter the Department of Justice pointed to as justification for the anti-American task force.

“The Biden administration attacked parents with no evidence. If the administration had even spent twenty minutes looking into the NSBA’s accusations, they would have found the claims untenable at best and malicious at worst,” said Education and Labor Committee Republican Leader Virginia Foxx. “The Biden administration should be ashamed for attacking parents’ desire to protect their children. The NSBA has finally apologized for the letter it sent to the administration labeling concerned parents as ‘domestic terrorists.’ The administration should revoke its memorandum which threatens the rights of concerned parents. Parents should not be forced to take a back seat in their child's education or intimidated into silence. We should be encouraging more parental involvement, not less.”

In the letter, the Members write: “We believe, like the majority of Americans, that every parent has a right to be involved in their child’s education. Second, parents who are concerned about material and curriculums in classrooms should be celebrated and admired, not made to feel like villains for simply asking basic questions regarding curriculums in their local schools. We are requesting that you immediately retract your October 4th memo, and dissolve any plans to stand up the superficial and unnecessary parent task force.”
