WASHINGTON – Today, Education and the Workforce Committee Chairwoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC) made the following statement following the passage of the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, which delivers on a key promise of the Commitment to America and protects female athletes from the Biden administration’s radical regulatory scheme:
“Women can rejoice in the fact that House Republicans are upholding their Commitment to America.
"Today, we passed the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act. If taken up by Senate Democrats and signed into law by our President, it could definitively prove our bipartisan commitment to America’s young girls.
"This bill is historic. Over 50 years ago, Congress passed Title IX, a provision of the Education Amendments of 1972 that was meant to protect women from unfair discrimination.
"In recent years, it has been used for the opposite purpose. Radical interpretations of Title IX have allowed men to slowly encroach more and more on women’s competitions.
"American women and girls deserve better.
"They deserve not to live in fear of losing a scholarship.
"They deserve not to live in fear of losing a spot on the roster.
"They deserve not to live in fear of losing a spot on the podium.
"That’s why today is historic. This is the first step. It starts here, by strengthening Title IX protections and returning to the promise of 1972. We are committed to protecting women from discrimination and women’s sports from exploitation."
