Foxx: Schools Are Not a Test Kitchen for Welfare Expansion

WASHINGTON, D.C., September 26, 2023

WASHINGTON – Today, House Education and the Workforce Committee Chairwoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC) issued the following statement opposing a final rule issued by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) that will allow wealthy families to participate in a school meal program intended for those in need:

“This administration’s gross infatuation with expanding the welfare state is now spilling over into America’s school lunch rooms. The Left is hooking more Americans on taxpayer subsidies. It is all about government dependence and control.

“Taxpayer dollars should be spent responsibly. That means ensuring benefits go to those actually in need. Yet, this administration finds it way too easy to spend hard-earned taxpayer dollars without promising accountability. It is insulting.

“Committee Republicans believe that students who need free lunches should be able to receive them. Period. That is not what this rule does. USDA’s rule grossly expands the welfare state and allows middle- and upper-income students to take advantage of a program that should be limited to those most in need.”
