American families have lost confidence in the public education system. According to the Washington Post, the number of homeschooled children in America has almost doubled from 1.5 million children in 2019 to up to 2.7 million in 2023.
“What’s behind the increase in homeschooling,” Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), heedlessly posted on X.
Weingarten needs to look only as far as the mirror to get her answer. Here are just a few ways the union boss has exerted her influence over the Biden administration’s education agenda:
Weingarten supported a strict mask mandate for elementary-school-aged children well after the height of the pandemic.
AFT led the charge behind the unnecessary and prolonged COVID school closures that left America’s students with severe learning loss.
Weingarten continues to try and rewrite history and falsely claimed that AFT ‘always’ advocated for schools to re-open.
Parents merely inquiring about curriculum or classroom practices have been targeted or made to feel like they shouldn’t be involved in their children’s education.
Weingarten likened proponents of school choice and parents’ rights to advocates of segregation.
These policies have had devastating effects made evident by the most recent National Assessment of Educational Progress, known as the nation’s report card. The year 2023 marked reading scores declines to their lowest level since 1992, and the largest math score decline since the initial assessments in 1990.
Education and the Workforce Committee Chairwoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC) highlighted the rise in homeschooling and celebrated parents taking control of their children’s education on the Evening Edit:
“I think [Weingarten] should look in the mirror. She’s the problem.”
“Homeschooling is great, and I am glad to see parents taking control of their children’s education.”
“Randi Weingarten is at the core of that issue. She kept the schools closed, she harmed our students. Despite what she says about wanting to help students, she does just the opposite.”
BOTTOM LINE: With abysmal test results and an extremist agenda, it’s no wonder parents are done leaving their children’s education in the hands of left-wing activists.
