Foxx Presses Su on Pattern of Pre-Election Union Pep Rallies

WASHINGTON, D.C., September 30, 2024
WASHINGTON – Education and the Workforce Committee Chairwoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC) sent a letter to Acting Secretary of Labor Julie Su requesting information about the Department of Labor’s (DOL) seemingly one-sided meeting of Biden-Harris supporters held less than 60 days before the election.

This meeting follows a similar political union pep rally that was held just 43 days before the 2022 election. This appears to be a pattern of lapses in judgment on the part of the Biden-Harris administration and DOL.

In the letter, Foxx writes: “The Committee on Education and the Workforce (Committee) seeks information regarding a recent event held at the Department of Labor (DOL) less than 60 days prior to the upcoming presidential election which appeared to be nothing more than a union pep rally. This inquiry continues the Committee’s ongoing investigation into questionable and potentially unethical activity at DOL during the Biden-Harris administration.”

Foxx continues: “The timing and apparent one-sided nature of this event are highly suspect, occurring 49 days before election day and seeming to involve only union leaders as speakers. The Committee is concerned the event and panel discussion is another example of a pro-union pep rally held at DOL’s national headquarters at taxpayer expense. … The Committee has long been concerned about DOL’s lapses in judgment involving holding one-sided events near an election. In 2022, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) held a so-called ‘Workers’ Voice Summit’ beginning just 43 days before that year’s election day. … The Committee is confounded by the Biden-Harris administration’s gall in hosting yet another one-sided event near an election.”

Foxx concludes by requesting additional information, including:
  • All documents and communications exchanged between DOL and the White House in preparation for the event and panel discussion;
  • A list of all attendees at the event and panel discussion (including both in-person and virtual attendees) and the organizations they represented;
  • A run-of-show of the event and panel discussion;
  • All handwritten and electronic notes taken by DOL staff during the event and panel discussion;
  • Any video or audio recordings, as well as any transcripts, related to the event in the possession of DOL;
  • An explanation of why DOL believes hosting this event and panel discussion so close to a presidential election is appropriate;
  • All documents and communications referring or relating to the legal or ethical propriety of holding the event and panel discussion, including but not limited to those involving DOL’s Office of Solicitor, any other executive branch ethics office, or any other appropriate authority; and,
  • A summary of how this event and panel discussion will inform DOL’s priorities and plans during a potential Harris administration.
