Foxx on Biden-Harris Withdrawing Rule Attacking Women’s Sports
WASHINGTON, D.C.,
December 20, 2024
WASHINGTON - Education and the Workforce Committee Chairwoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC) issued the following statement after the Biden-Harris administration announced it was withdrawing a rule that would hurt women’s sports:
“The Biden-Harris administration’s proposed rule to hurt women’s sports is antithetical to the cornerstone of sports—fairness. Allowing men to compete against women undermines and limits opportunities for women. It’s also antithetical to the cornerstone of Title IX, which was intended to give women more opportunities, not take them away. “I appreciate that this flawed rule is being pulled back—it never should have been proposed in the first place. But there is still egg on your face, Mr. President. You advanced another Title IX rule that has left girls, women, and schools reeling because it removes protections and equal opportunities that women have fought for decades to secure. “Simply put, the attack the Biden-Harris administration unleashed on women and women’s sport is still underway and I look forward to working with the Trump administration and my Republican colleagues to fight to protect women’s sports.” BACKGROUND On July 11, 2024, the House passed, under Chairwoman Foxx’s leadership, H.J. Res. 165, a Congressional Review Act resolution to nullify the Biden-Harris administration’s Title IX rule. On June 26, 2024, Speaker Johnson led a panel discussion on protecting women’s sports and the Biden administration’s attempts to expunge decades of progress for women and girls across America. The event included former U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos, Heather Higgins of Independent Women’s Forum, and NCAA swimmer Riley Gaines. On April 20, 2023, House Republicans passed H.R. 734, the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act of 2023, which amends Title IX to protect the law’s intent and the integrity of women’s athletics. |
