Today, Education and Workforce Committee Chairman Tim Walberg (R-MI) issued the following statement on reports of a Chinese national employed at the University of Michigan who attempted to smuggle a dangerous biological pathogen into the United States: 

“It has been clear for quite some time that the Chinese government is utilizing supposedly innocuous research partnerships with American universities to undermine our nation’s interests. Today’s report of a University of Michigan Research Fellow from China intending to use a university laboratory for a smuggled pathogen designed to target food crops should concern every American. It is critical that we protect our national security and pass legislation like the DETERRENT Act to shed light on the litany of ways that these foreign relationships have allowed adversaries to infiltrate college campuses.”
