Chair Walberg Applauds Ending Taxpayer-Funded Gender Procedures for Children

Today, Education and Workforce Committee Chairman Tim Walberg (R-MI) released the following statement in response to the Trump administration taking steps to prohibit the use of taxpayer dollars to fund gender transitions for minors:

“The Biden-Harris administration supported life-altering medications and surgeries for minors—often sidelining parental consent in the process. Today’s announcement honors the Republican promise to restore parental rights, ensuring parents make decisions about how to raise and care for their children. Parents are best positioned to make informed medical decisions for their children and should be able to do so without coercion or interference from medical institutions or the federal government.”

Background:

In December 2022, the Education and Workforce Committee sent letters to then-Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra and multiple hospitals questioning gender-transition interventions for children and requesting information about policies that deny parents the opportunity to be involved in life-altering medical decisions impacting their children.
