Today, Education and Workforce Committee Chairman Tim Walberg (R-MI) issued the following statement on the 2025 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) results:

“Today’s results should be a wake-up call. American students are capable of competing with anyone in the world, but our education system is failing to give them the knowledge and skills they need to succeed.

“Since 2022, U.S. reading scores have fallen significantly, while math performance remains stuck near historic lows. One in three American 15-year-olds can’t do basic math, and more than one in four struggles with basic reading. At the same time, students in countries across the globe continue to outperform the United States.

“More spending and more Washington bureaucracy won’t fix what’s broken. We need to get back to the basics: empower parents, demand academic excellence, and make sure every student is prepared to succeed in the classroom.”

BACKGROUND
According to the 2025 PISA results:

• U.S. reading scores dropped 14 points since 2022, falling to one of the lowest levels ever recorded for American students.
• U.S. math scores showed no meaningful improvement and remain near historic lows.
• One in three American 15-year-olds lacks basic math skills, and more than one in four lacks basic reading skills.
