Chairman Walberg Applauds House Passage of Legislation to Combat Child Obesity and Inactivity

WASHINGTON, D.C., September 16, 2026
Today, Education and Workforce Committee Chairman Tim Walberg (R-MI) praised House passage of  H.R. 9723, Fit Future Act, legislation that codifies the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition, restores the Presidential Fitness Test, and makes physical activity a lasting national priority—helping more kids build healthy habits and grow into healthier adults.

“The Presidential Fitness Test gives students a goal to work toward and encourages them to take an active role in physical fitness. These are lessons that can last a lifetime and apply to other challenges in life,” said Chairman Walberg. “A strong future begins with strong kids. I’m glad to see H.R. 9723 pass the House and I applaud Congressmen Mackenzie and Van Drew for their efforts to give our children the tools they need to grow up healthy and strong.”

“The Fit Future Act codifies the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition and puts a renewed Presidential Fitness Test at the center of its work,” said Congressman Ryan Mackenzie (R-PA). “By setting clear goals for physical fitness, strengthening physical education and youth sports, and encouraging healthy habits early in life, we can help more kids stay active and build a stronger foundation for the future. I’m grateful to my colleagues for supporting this legislation in the House and helping make youth fitness a lasting national priority.”

“I am proud to see this pass the House,” said Congressman Van Drew (R-NJ). “I have been working on bringing the Presidential Fitness Test back for a long time because I truly believe getting our kids healthier and more active has to be a priority. We have real momentum behind this now, and I am excited to see this effort continue moving forward.”
