Chair Walberg Presses UCLA, UCSF on Discrimination Following Antisemitism Probe
WASHINGTON, D.C.,

Education and Workforce Committee Chairman Tim Walberg (R-MI) is demanding answers from the University of California, Los Angeles David Geffen School of Medicine (UCLA Med) and the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) over concerns about race and sex-based discrimination in their admissions and hiring practices.
In August 2025, Chairman Walberg launched investigations into antisemitism at UCLA Med and UCSF. That oversight, according to the Committee's new letters, “revealed a broader pernicious infrastructure at medical schools that perpetuates not only antisemitism but other forms of discrimination.” At UCLA Med, the Committee cites a May 2026 Department of Justice finding that the medical school “discriminated against other applicants to benefit preferred race classes of Black and Hispanic.” The letter also points to whistleblower allegations that admissions officials pushed through unqualified candidates and used ZIP codes to identify applicants' race. At UCSF, the Committee cites a September 2026 Department of Justice finding that “from 2023 through 2025, UCSF [School of Medicine] consistently accepted white and Asian applicants at far lower rates than black and Hispanic applicants.” The letter also raises concerns about guidance encouraging residency programs to set diversity targets and avoid relying strictly on standardized metrics. Background: Since 2023, the Committee has investigated antisemitism on college campuses through hearings, oversight letters, and reports. Most recently, in March 2026, the Committee released a majority staff report examining antisemitism in higher education and failures by university leadership to address it. In July, the Committee held a hearing examining the impact of DEI policies on medical education. Read the letters to UCLA and UCSF. |
