One of government’s most basic responsibilities is to defend fiercely freedom of religion. Unfortunately, Democrats often abandon that call and become religious freedom’s greatest threat.
Their latest battleground against our first amendment rights is the budget. The Democrats’ plan allocates funding that could result in a rewriting of key Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) guidance on the freedom of religious organizations to make religiously-based employment decisions, as well as on protections for religious employees in the workforce.
A Catholic church needs Catholic employees—this is not a new concept, it is not discrimination, and it is certainly not the controversy liberals make it out to be. Every Member of Congress makes hiring decisions based on an individual’s political background; it is hypocritical to turn around and deny religious organizations the right to hire employees of the same religion.
Today, Republican Leader of the Education and Labor Committee Virginia Foxx (R-NC) offered an amendment prohibiting the EEOC from undermining that guidance. In America, employers should not be forced to check their religion at the workplace’s door.
