***MEDIA ADVISORY*** Subcommittee to Examine Federal Overreach into Institutions of Higher Education

On Friday, March 11 at 10:00 a.m., the Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Training, chaired by Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC), will hold a hearing entitled, ”Education Regulations: Federal Overreach into Academic Affairs.” The hearing will take place in room 2175 of the Rayburn House Office Building.

Last fall, the U.S. Department of Education published 14 new program integrity regulations scheduled to take effect July 1, 2011. Two of these regulations are particularly troublesome as they inject the federal government into areas that have historically been left to the states or institutions of higher education. As a result, institutions and states will be forced to dedicate significant resources toward meeting these new regulatory requirements.

Friday’s hearing will give members the opportunity to examine how this bureaucratic overreach could harm an institution’s ability to compete and successfully prepare students to enter the workforce.
