WASHINGTON – Education and the Workforce Committee Chairwoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC) today joined key backers of Title IX to discuss the landmark law and the importance of preserving it for future generations. The discussion comes one day before the Biden-Harris administration’s disastrous rule is set to take effect.
Chairwoman Foxx delivered the following remarks, as prepared for delivery:
“Since the first day the Biden-Harris administration proposed its Title IX rule allowing biological men to compete in women’s athletics, the Committee has been on the frontlines fighting against it.
“This Title IX rule is a slap in the face to the women and girls who prepare for competition and will now have to compete on an uneven playing field. This rule is unjust and directly in conflict with athletics’ core principles of integrity and fairness.
“In one of the first acts of the 118th Congress, the Committee advanced H.R. 734, the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, which would protect the sanctity of female sports from the encroachment of biological males. That bill currently sits on Senator Schumer’s desk.
“More recently, Rep. Mary Miller (R-IL) introduced, and the Committee passed, H.J. Res. 165, which would repeal the Biden-Harris rule. Again, that legislation is stalled on Senator Schumer’s desk.
“While legislative efforts to protect women’s sports have been thwarted, the Committee has been vindicated by the courts.
“Federal courts have blocked the rule in 21 states and in many individual schools around the country. Those cases will continue to play out in the appeals courts and potentially the Supreme Court, so I encourage the Independent Women’s Forum to keep fighting.
“I will keep fighting with you, because the Biden-Harris Title IX rule will hurt and limit opportunities for women and girls and that is unacceptable.”
Today’s call was hosted by Independent Women’s Forum (IWF) and IWF Ambassador Riley Gaines. Other participants included Martina Navratilova, one of the greatest tennis players of all time and founding member of the Women’s Sports Policy Working Group; Coach Kim Russell, former Head Women’s Lacrosse Coach at Oberlin College and IWF ambassador; Payton McNabb, former North Carolina high school volleyball player who was severely injured by a male on the women’s volleyball court and IWF ambassador; May Mailman, Independent Women’s Law Center Director; Cameron Norris from Consovoy McCarthy who is representing Independent Women’s Law Center in Alabama v. Cardona and counsel in Tennessee v. Cardona; and Haley Olive, freshman at Webber International University in Florida, NAIA Women’s Lacrosse, Independent Women’s Network Member and Declarant in Alabama v. Cardona.
BACKGROUND:
Under Chairwoman Foxx’s leadership, H.J. Res. 165, a Congressional Review Act resolution to nullify the Biden-Harris administration’s Title IX rule, passed the Committee with a vote of 24 to 16. It passed the U.S. House of Representatives with a vote of 210 to 205. Rep. Mary Miller sponsored the legislation.
