***MEDIA ADVISORY*** Foxx Announces Joint Subcommittee Hearing on Gainful Employment

On Friday, July 8 at 10:00 a.m., the Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Training, chaired by Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC), will hold a joint hearing with the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform’s Subcommittee on Regulatory Affairs, Stimulus Oversight and Government Spending. The hearing, entitled “The Gainful Employment Regulation: Limiting Job Growth and Student Choice,” will take place in room 2154 of the Rayburn House Office Building.

On July 1, 2011, the first two components of the Department of Education’s controversial gainful employment regulation went into effect. This new regulation puts the department in charge of deciding whether students earn enough money in their careers to justify federal student aid. It is estimated the gainful employment regulation could affect thousands of programs at proprietary institutions and block postsecondary education opportunities for millions of Americans. At a time when more than 13 million workers are unemployed, Congress cannot stand by as the administration attempts to impose yet another job-destroying regulation.

At Friday’s joint hearing, members of the Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Training and the Subcommittee on Regulatory Affairs, Stimulus Oversight and Government Spending will investigate the implications of the poorly conceived regulation on institutions and students.
