Kline Statement on Proposed Higher Education Price Controls
WASHINGTON, D.C.,
July 23, 2010
Rep. John Kline (R-MN), the top Republican on the U.S. House Education and Labor Committee, issued the following statement today in response to a proposed federal definition of “gainful employment” that would set federal caps on students’ ability to finance their higher education at certain institutions:
“Like the misguided proposal that preceded it, this proposed regulation uses federal price controls as a blunt instrument to address a complex challenge. I share the concern about students borrowing too much for an education that provides them too little value. I simply do not believe unique individuals can be plugged into an arbitrary government equation to produce a true picture of higher education value. I will continue expressing my concerns to the Department of Education in an effort to find a more thoughtful approach that protects both students and taxpayers.” # # # |
