On Wednesday, March 9 at 2:00 p.m., the U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workforce, chaired by Rep. John Kline (R-MN), will hold a hearing entitled, "The Budget and Policy Proposals of the U.S. Department of Education."The hearing will take place in room 2175 of the Rayburn House Office Building.
The administration has proposed a $94.3 billion budget for the Department of Education for Fiscal Year 2012. The budget request includes $48.8 billion in discretionary funding for the department, an increase of 4.3 percent over last year’s funding level. The request also includes $28.6 billion in discretionary funding for Pell Grants, an increase of $5.4 billion over last year’s funding level. Together, the discretionary spending totals for the department amount to $77.4 billion, a 10.7 percent increase over current levels. Wednesday’s hearing will provide members an opportunity to review the administration’s budget request and examine whether an increase in department spending is the best approach to both fiscal and education policies. The Honorable Arne Duncan, U.S. Secretary of Education, will offer testimony and answer members' questions during the hearing.
